About

Come with us on this walking tour to discover the history of Gdańsk. Along the way, we will compare contemporary views with archival photographs to discover how the city has changed over the centuries.

Gdańsk, a Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea, combines more than a thousand years of history with a vibrant modernity.

Its history stretches back centuries to the monumental Saint Mary's Basilica and Gothic-Renaissance tenement houses to late 20th century sites such as the shipyards, where Solidarność was born, now bustling with nightlife.

The city is where World War II symbolically began. Today the Museum of the Second World War and the European Solidarity Centre educate and inspire.

As we walk through the city, we will see the monumental buildings and hidden details: traces of former buildings and walls, and new life in the shipyard halls.

This tour is brought to you by Europeana, which shares and promotes Europe's digital cultural heritage to be used and enjoyed by everyone for learning, for work, or just for fun. The walking tour was developed in collaboration with local guides and the Institute of Urban Culture in Gdańsk.

This walking tour is around 3.9 kilometres / 2.4 miles.
