Tucked just inside the forest at the top of a wide staircase, the white stacked stones here are said to be the throne of legendary Kazakh hero Abylai Khan, whose grandson Abilmansur was also honoured here for his heroic fighting in the Dzungar wars. Legend says that visitors who circle the throne seven times in a clockwise direction will be granted one wish – of course, for those that wish to be photographed in Kazakh national costume or holding a golden eagle, their wishes can immediately come true on the walk up to the throne.

Opposite is  a large modern Multimedia Interactive Complex (1405, 10am-7pm, adult/child 3000/2000 Tenge, 53.082497, 70.235881) space with film, multimedia exhibitions, and museum displays about the legends of Burabay and Kazakh history, including local hero Abylai Khan. A descendant of Janybek Khan, 15th century co-creator of the Kazakh Khanate, Abylai’s humble youth in exile belies his later fame as a legendary warrior in the Dzunjgar wars and political prominence after. Among the last great khans of the Kazakh Khanate, Abylai remains a celebrated figure in modern Kazakh history and culture.

Abylai Khan Throne is on the west side of Borovoe Lake, and can be accessed from Burabay town (5.3km) by car, bicycle, or on foot.
