Located in the Gulf of Genoa, this is one of the largest aquaria in Europe, and the largest one in Italy. Genoa is part of the huge waterfront, “Edutainment” center. This is going to take you several days to fully explore. Acquario di Genova (Aquarium) was built in the year 1992 for the purpose of celebrating the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Genoa’s native son, Christopher Columbus.
As you all might know Christopher Columbus was born in 1951 in the city of Genoa. He grew to become one of the greatest explorers and accidentally discovered the shores of the North American continent. He also helped in the establishment of communication between Native Americans and Europeans. Although it has been discovered that Christopher Columbus was not the first person to discover America, he is credited with being the one who allowed the widespread interaction among the native Indians of the “New land” and the Europeans. Christopher Columbus undertook 4 voyages beginning in 1492. At this time, he made several attempts to establish a settlement on the island of Hispaniola.
Nevertheless, the Aquarium reproduces a coastal atmosphere in forty eight aquaria, four of which are have 2 viewing levels and four are oceanic. Several viewing windows of the aquaria are fabricated and installed using R-Cast acrylic, such as sting ray exhibits, tropical fish, penguins, sharks, dolphins, and the Harbor Seal. As a matter of fact, there are several tanks and acrylic windows found inside the original part of the building which is a veritable wall of water that visitors can walk through. In the year 1998, a 100 meter ship was added to one of the aquaria, and a walkaway was used to connect the ship to the Aquarium of Genoa. The walls are in fact virtual tanks on the bottom of the ship. This enables the tourists walking through the ship experience echoes, currents, and waves from the sea.
This aquarium educates about marine animal life. It holds all kinds of marine animals, and shows them usually in their natural environment. The aquarium is so popular that about 1.2 million tourists visit it each year. The aquarium is about 10,000 square meters, and has seventy one tanks. In addition, it is surrounded by coastal waters, which makes it fun to explore, as stated before. The scenery is much more amazing from the outside; in fact some people argue that it looks like bunch of freights that are lined up on top of a ship.
