The great Albany Museum is a site of Grahamstown history. Built in 1855 it holds the title of the second oldest museum in South Africa. The museum is situated on the Rhodes University campus and consists of a family of several buildings including Fort Selwyn, the Old Provost Military prison, the History Museum and Drostdy Arch to mention a few. Many students pass these sites casually unaware of the rich heritage amongst them. Each building is significant in its own right and gate keeps research and interesting artefacts. Albany Museum is open to all people. It offers educational programmes to students and school-going learners around Makhanda further enriching the community with worthwhile knowledge about heritage, history, and the sciences. Albany Museum holds many exhibitions. One of the permanent exhibitions is the Earth Space room. It takes you on a journey through the solar system. Another interesting site is the Fossil Heritage exhibit, that has ancient dinosaurs on display such as stegosaur which was the first dinosaur reported from Africa in 1845.
