Alexander Vampilov was born on the 19th of August, 1937 in a family of teachers from Cheremkhovo. His childhood and youth passed in Kutulik (a small settlement of Alarsky Region). After finishing school he entered historical and philological department of Irkutsk State University. He graduated in 1960 and worked as a journalist. His first plays and stories were published in the beginning of 1960s. He became famous as a playwright. A modern person is a center of his innovatory plays. Usually his main characters experience inner fights because of their complex personality. Vampilov ruthlessly revealed spiritual crisis of his characters, the crises of soul which was hidden under the cover of external wellbeing. Vampilov’s plays were not accepted well by critics. For ex., his play called “Elder Son” was staged in Russia for the first time by V. Simonovsky in Irkutsk Drama Theater of Okhlopkov in 1969. Alexander Vampilov died right before his 35th anniversary on Baikal, in Listvyanka. Vampilov was a member of USSR Writers Union since 1966, he was posthumously awarded Josef Utkin Prize in 1972. On the 20th of September, 2003 Irkutsk entrepreneurs installed a monument to Vampilov using their own funds. This monument is situated near Drama Theater. M. Pereyaslavets was a sculptor and A. Gnezdilov – an architect.
