Argimusco Megaliths: the Italian Stonehenge

About 7 kilometers south of Montalbano, you will be charmed by another extremely captivating and mystical place: it is the area known as "Megaliti dell'Argimusco". This is the largest area in Sicily with the presence of numerous megalithic structures. They rise in the quiet countryside and consist of a series of tall rocks shaped in zoomorphic and anthropomorphic forms. They have a great symbolic, spiritual and scientific value.
The origin of these quartz sandstone rocks is controversial.
According to some researchers, the Argimusco Megaliths are proof of ancient civilizations that lived in Sicily and left traces that arrived intact to us. According to other theories, instead, they would simply be the result of natural formations and wind erosion that occurred over the centuries.
However, their structure and strategic position, the high symbolic value and the religious and magical rituals associated to this place, seem to support the theories considering these rocks archaeoastronomical artifacts. Thus, they would have not only astronomical functions, but also religious functions: - astronomical, because they were used to calculate solstices, equinoxes, Moon phases and seasons;
- religious, because it was a sacred site where the ancient Sun worship was celebrated by the so-called "Megalithic civilizations".

All the theories and studies realized here give this sacred site the right to be included in the European map of the Megalithic civilizations. And the right to be considered the Italian Stonehenge.
Among the several shapes represented by the rocks, you will recognize: the "Eagle", the "Praying figure" also called "the Neolithic Goddess", "the Big Skull" and "the Lion". There are also two Menhirs, the female and the male. Each one responds to a clear symbolism giving them a specific meaning and function.
And even if we cannot tell for sure who created this place, it is characterized by such a mystery, a scientific nature and a mystical atmosphere you cannot remain indifferent to it.
