Ary Scheffer, a Dutchman who became a naturalised French citizen, was a celebrated painter in Paris. For three years from 1819 he had a studio at this address. He had moved to the French capital as a 16-year-old in 1811, along with his mother and younger brothers. His great talent for drawing and painting gained him admission to the École des Beaux-Arts. There, he was taught by Pierre Guérin, and his fellow students included Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Géricault.
Scheffer became a skilled painter of historical genre pieces and religious art. His former home and studios in Montmartre now house the Musée de la Vie romantique.
Return now to Rue du Cherche-Midi and turn right to continue the tour.
