The Mallorcan hedgehog, commonly known as the "Moorish hedgehog", is a mammal whose entire body, with the exception of its belly, is covered with quills measuring about 1 millimetre thick by 2 or 2.5 centimetres long. It weighs 1,100 grams and measures between 22 and 29 centimetres in total length. It has no neck and on the head, the eyes are very dark and small, the ears are rounded and short, the muzzle is pointed. Its paws are short and have 5 toes each and are provided with strong nails. The tail is also short. This animal lives in forests, garrigue, scrubland, bushes, fences, thickets, cultivated areas, and generally the least cold and humid places. The diet of the Majorcan hedgehog is omnivorous, hunting and eating insects, larvae, myriapods, snails, slugs, earthworms and even frogs, mice, lizards, snakes and vipers. This diet is complemented with eggs and chicks of ground-nesting birds, acorns and other fruits. It is mainly active at night, and can be seen from dusk to dawn. Its sense of smell is highly developed, it walks a lot and can swim very well.
