The iconic Altino Arantes Building, widely known as the Banespa Building, is the third highest building in the city and the fifth highest in Brazil.
Construction began in 1939, in order to house the São Paulo State Bank (Banespa), which was undergoing a major expansion. Originally designed by Plínio Botelho de Amaral, the developer Camargo & Mesquita adapted the work so it bore a closer resemblance to the Empire State Building in New York.
