The Battle of the Grebbeberg began in the Voorpostenstrook on 11 May 1940.

The SS Regiment Der Führer with 3500 men – part of the 207th Division with a total of 20,000 men – advanced in the direction of Rhenen.

The Grebbeberg and Voorpostenstrook were being defended by the Eighth Infantry Regiment with 2500 men. Simple field fortifications were used to defend the Voorpostenstrook.
