It is believed that the fountain located before us was named in honor of the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem into which "descended the angel of the Lord." The bronze sculpture of an angel at the center of the fountain is the work of Emma Stebbins sculpted in 1868. Behind the fountain is the Terrace. It's staircase is decorated with reliefs on the theme of the Seasons. The terrace and fountain are well known and beloved places for New Yorkers to meet.
