Biergerzenter
Overview

The Biergerzenter combines several historical buildings. The part facing Rue Notre Dame served as a refuge for Marienthal’s Dominican nuns in 1691. The main entrance was only built in 1878 and led into the first headquarters of the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg. The buildings next to Place Guillaume were built in the 19th century. They stand on the foundations of the former Franciscan monastery, which was built in 1250 and demolished in 1830. From 1910, the building in Rue Notre Dame served as a boarding school for young girls, then as a nunnery. Luxembourg city purchased the premises in 2003. Listed as a national monument in 2010, the building was restored and converted in accordance with the International Council of Monuments and Sites.
