Blue Mosque
Overview

The domes and six thin minarets of the Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii in Turkish), better known as the "Blue Mosque", dominate the Istanbul skyline. In the seventeenth century, Sultan Ahmet I decided to build an Islamic place of worship that in his intentions had to be even more majestic than the Hagia Sophia. The two great architectural achievements today are located opposite each other in the main square of Istanbul, near the ancient Byzantine racecourse.

The interior is often illuminated by the light produced by over 250 windows that make up the structure and which give it an even more suggestive atmosphere. To enter the mosque you have to take off your shoes and cover the uncovered parts of the body with special towels that are delivered to the entrance.
