Bodbe is a small monastery located in the village of the same name, just 2 km from Signagi. The complex consists of two churches: one – a smaller church that contains the remains of St. Nino; the other– a bigger one has just been recently built and is being used for services.
The church has a breathtaking view over the fertile Alazani Valley and the massive Caucasus mountains. By the way – St. Nino is a VIP – she came from a Greek-speaking Roman family from Kolastra, Cappadocia and was among the first to propagate the ideas of Christianity, ultimately leading Georgia to declare Christianity as the state religion in 337.
The little church in Bodbe was originally built by King Mirian in the 4th century, over the grave of St. Nino. The church has been rebuilt several times since then and is considered an important place of pilgrimage in Georgia. Saint Nino has been canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church and become one of the most venerated saints.
Getting there: The best way to visit the monastery is by Marshrutka from Tbilisi to Signagi. Weather permitting, there is a beautiful walk from Signagi to Bodbe Convent along a 2km signposted road out of town. A return trip from Signagi by taxi costs EUR 4-7 with waiting time.
