Bolshaya Ordinka Street

Bolshaya Ordynka Street is an ancient road in the south. It started on the outskirts of the Tsar’s garden which was on the island near the Kremlin. In the 14th Century the road ran from Balchug – on the marshy bank of the Moscow river. Balchug is Turkic for dirt. The abundance of running water in this area attracted artisans who worked in water retaining production. Coiners, blacksmiths, shepherds and weavers all settled here. The Hordes lived in the main districts. They had to take levies and baggage to Orda – The Hordes. There were also oral interpreters who translated from Tartar. Archers’ regiments stood separately.

Ordynka Street is one and a half kilometres long. Most of the buildings used to be taverns, stores, coaching yards and service buildings.
