The large tower in the centre of the east wall is the Broad Arrow Tower. This was originally a guard tower, and was later used to store royal supplies and as a prison.
It takes its name from the Broad Arrow symbol, which is stamped upon all items of Royal ordnance and supplies.
The strategic location and the symbolic importance of the Tower of London made it a natural centre for the storage of royal possessions. The Wardrobe, as it was called, stored important items of royal property including jewels, plate, coins, state documents, textiles, fur, tools, furniture and, crucially, arms and armour.
