Butter Market
Overview
Reviews 0

The remarkable structure on the corner of Kleine Poot and Hofstraat, consisting of a cast-iron roof on columns, is the former Butter market. The inscription 'Fide sed cui vide' means: 'have faith, but look who you trust'. The staff above this inscription most likely refers to Mercury, the god of commerce.

The forging work comes from the Deventer company Nering Bögel, one of the largest iron foundries in the Netherlands. In Deventer you can find many ornaments made by this company, such as door decorations, lanterns, manhole covers, balcony parties and cast iron parts of the Wilhelmina Fountain on the Brink.
