Long before package holidays abroad, locals from Bo’ness used to head for the beach at Carriden on sunny days. It was knicknamed the Crookies after a family called Cruickshanks, who lived in the area.

From Carriden you can walk eastwards along the John Muir Way to the impressive Blackness Castle and then onto the grandeur of Hopetoun House and the stunning Forth Bridges at South Queensferry.
