Castlegate leads to the 11th century castle and early 14th century barbican (castle gateway). Barbican House, 16th century with an 18th century frontage, is now a museum. Across Castlegate is Bartholemew House, fronted with shiny black rather than red mathematical tiles. On the opposite side of the High Street, note the 14th century detailing on the corner of St Martin’s Lane.
