Fried eels, canned and preserved in escabeche sauce, are a typical product of Murtosa and one of its trademarks. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the women from Murtosa fried and sold eels at fairs and pilgrimages in the region - an activity that later gave way to the canning industry. The factory started by producing canned eels, but after that other species were added, like canned cod, mussels, trout, octopus, squid and the traditional canned sardines, mackerel, and tuna.
In the old building of the eel canning factory – the COMUR – there is a museum dedicated to the history of the Murtosa canning factory and the community where it is located. By visiting the museum, you will learn about the specific features of Murtosa and the Ria de Aveiro that gave rise to this factory, its workers (mostly by women) and the complete canning process, from the arrival of the fish to its dispatch.
