David Baazov Museum

This museum of Jewish history is named after David Baazov and is not exactly an easy place to find nor as a matter of fact, is it even that well-known. But it's worth a trip, if one has spare time in Tbilisi and interested in the Jewish link to Georgia.

David Baazov was born in Tskhinvali and led the Zionist movement in the country. During the Great Purges, both of his sons were arrested and one of them executed. David Baazov was also arrested and sentenced to death for Zionism. The sentence was later commuted to exile to Siberia. In 1945, he returned to Georgia and mainly engaged in educational activities.

The museum that is located in the former Synagogue building has only one floor of displays. It exhibits a number of objects, clothes, photographs, and information pieces that describe the life of the Jewish community, which by some sources began in Georgia from the time of the destruction of the First Temple. Unfortunately, there's not much on David Baazov himself and his zeal in leading the Zionist movement. Among the cons, the museum offers no proper explanatory material or foreign-language speaking guides.
