Der Aa-kerk

The Aa-church has been built around 1200 to replace a small wooden chapel. Throughout the ages the church has been rebuilt and expanded many times, with the last one being the restoration effort of 1987. By then, it acquired it's final look that you can see now.

You may wonder now where the peculiar name of this church comes from. In truth, it's called the "Aa church" after a small river called "Aa" which has long disappeared from the face of Groningen.

Also interesting to know is that after 1976, when it was closed for a while due to its dilapidated state, it wasn't used as a church anymore. Now, it's often used to hold cultural and business events.
