Filippovsky is the quietest of Arbat’s lanes. In olden days it bore the title “Ikon-Painters Lane”, on account of the School of Ikon-Painting that stood here, in what was then a village in Moscow’s suburbs. The Ikon-School was under Royal patronage, even at that time. After the building of the Apostle Phillip Church, local people began calling it Filippovsky pereulok – St Phillip’s Lane – but the official name-change followed only much later.
