From the 1960's, the area on the Kianggeh riverbank was bustling and lively with people walking through colorful market stalls selling a variety of goods. Many local ingredients, delicacies, medicines, sometimes small live animals, handicrafts, and tools could be found here. Surprisingly, you could name anything and the possibility of the vendors selling them was high. Residents of Kampong Ayer would travel to and from this place to sell their goods or alight to the city.
Mornings were always busy with people trying to get their hands on fresh produce and uncommon (sometimes rare!) ingredients and animals such as live snakehead fish.
Due to concerns of cleanliness and environmental hazards in the future, Tamu Kianggeh was moved to a location further inland. Since 2016, the area is now a quiet stretch of concrete by the river in the city.
