Frays River
This is Frays River, we’re going to cross over the bridge and then turn right into Rockingham parade which will take us to Fassnidge Park. Frays river is a mill race, designed to power water mills. In the fifteenth century a man called John Fray oversaw a scheme to divert some of the water from the River Colne into a nearby tributary to increase the flow of water. It became known as Frays river and flour mills opened along its banks.
As you walk down Rockingham Parade, across the other side of the river is a white building with a triangular roof - number 47. This was Rockingham Hall and housed the first cinema in Uxbridge opened by Jack Hutton in 1909.
The river here was used by locals for swimming, before public swimming baths arrived in Uxbridge.
Keep walking into Fassnidge Park.
