Between Strömsholmen and Munktellstaden you´ll find what is today Eskilstuna’s city museum in the building where there used to be a rifle factory. The building was completed in the 1840s. Carl Gustaf´s rifle factory contributed to the development of Eskilstuna. At the beginning of the 20th century, weapons began to be manufactured and because World War II the workforce was increased by 200 %. At most, the factory had about 1500 employees. Recently, the quay around the house was redone, with the concept “from backside to front”. Before the redesign the entrance from Strömsholmen was weak, now it can be an inviting path through the kunskapsstråk. Some of the old houses, west of the large factory, have now been converted into housing, preschool or is used by Eskilstunas Ölkultur. One of the buildings that was converted into housing is the so-called cannon house, which is located on the islet close to Munktellstaden. The building is called canon house because the arm control department was located here, which gave the reason to decorate the house with two old position artillery cannons that still remain. What used to be a relatively closed are today invites to movement, stay and activities.
