The memorial consists of several monuments interconnected in a single composition starting from the late 1970s. It begins with the Obelisk of the Eternal Flame - two high steles, one supporting the other, symbolizing the “unity of the front and home front”. The composition continues with the Walk of Fame, on its both sides more than 140,000 names are carved on 200-meter slabs. There are names of all the South Kazakhstanis who were mobilized from this region. Almost half of them did not return from the fronts of World War II.

It is worth noting the Circle of Heroes drafted into the war from South Kazakhstan - these are 51 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 8 holders of the Order of Glory and tens of thousands of ordinary soldiers and officers.

There is another monument on the territory of the Memorial Complex - a combat aircraft transferred from Ordabasy Square. It serves as a symbolic reminder that during the World War II, the Chuguev Aviation School evacuated from Ukraine to Shymkent became a center for training new combat air crews.

Triple hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Kozhedub worked there as an instructor before going to the front.

During the war Shymkent accepted thousands of refugees, dozens of evacuated factories, 16 orphan houses, USSR Academy of Architecture and other institutions. Slow paced life of South Kazakhstanis rapidly changed to dark days of wartime. The work of factories, collective farms, institutions was reprofiled to achieve the goal uniting all residents of a large country - "Everything for the front - everything for the Victory."

South Kazakhstan supplied the country with lead, shells, coal, cotton, grain, meat, medicines, uniforms, fur, soap, oil, fruits and vegetables … During the war the lead factory was the main supplier of metal. Every 7th out of 10 bullets was made of Shymkent lead. It was a substantial contribution to the Victory.
