Gona, often referred to as Georgia’s Switzerland, is a picturesque village located in the Chveshura River valley, some 35 km from Ambrolauri. Gona is a must see for any jeep tour in Racha region due to the impressive mountain range that forms a stunning backdrop to the village, providing artistic inspiration to anyone interested in photographing or drawing. Main drawback – broken road.
There are not many year-round residents in the village and its territory is mostly used by the locals as summer pastures. Apart from the beautiful scenery, there are old rustic wooden houses and a medieval church in the village worth a closer look.
Getting there: Gona is only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles (a round-trip from Ambrolauri costs around EUR 30-40). Enquire about the available options at Ambrolauri Tourist Visitor Centre.
