Governor William Comstock was born in Alpena and was involved in the lumber business with his family. He served one term as Mayor in Alpena and then moved to Detroit in 1919, where he became leader of the State Democratic Party. He became very interested in politics and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1926, in 1928 and 1930. He was finally elected governor in 1932 and served one term. He was unsuccessful in a re-election bid in 1934. One of the things that he was known for is signing a bill that ended prohibition against alcohol in 1933.
