General James Wolfe was a British Army officer who is famous for his leadership of British forces during the 1759 Battle of Québec. Built in 1930 and unveiled by the Marquis de Montcalm, a descendant of Wolfe's famous adversary, the statue commemorates Wolfe’s victory over the French on the Plains of Abraham, which secured Canada for the British. Wolfe was killed in the battle on 13 September 1759, but his remains were buried in the crypt of St Alfege church, Greenwich.
