Gvara is a small fort rather than a fortress, located in Machakhela Valley. It’s best
explored by combining several more sites in the region. With most of its protective walls
currently destroyed, Gvara still merits a short stop because of its picturesque view over
the Chorokhi Valley. A viewpoint from the top offers a many-kilometer-deep glimpse
into the gorge, including to Turkey, which is just on the other side of the Chorokhi River.
Getting There: The fortress can be reached even by a small car; to get to the fortress an
uphill ascent is required.
