Our visit begins on the quai de Queyries, at the Parc des Angéliques. Admire in front of you the left bank and buildings of the 18th century. Behind them is located the Jardin Public, where is established the historical Botanic Garden of Bordeaux. It embodies the traditional botanic garden where plants are presented respecting a particular botanic classification. The botanic garden at la Bastide, as for him, is turned towards present scientific preoccupations. Diversity, permanent evolution of plants as well as landscape transformation are highlighted there.
Its location is significant. La Bastide, the district where you stand, belongs to a group of city councils separated from the strong and ancient urbanisation of the conurbation of Bordeaux. In the past, la Bastide was not a part of Bordeaux.
In 1995, urban have created conditions to a "recovery pact" for the district, including diverse operations of public planning. One of these was the construction of a new Botanic Garden. To create it, an invitation to tender has been made and won by the landscaper Catherine Mosbach, which would collaborate with the architect Françoise Hélène Jourda. Did you know that, usually for such projects, the architect chooses the landscaper ? Yet, to conceive the Botanic Garden, the opposite process has been followed. A first one !
We will now enter the Botanic Garden. But what is a botanic garden ? It is an institution of scientific and educational purpose. 3 missions are common to the network of all Botanic Gardens in the world : the species conservation, the scientific research, and the knowledge transmission. Every year, more than 360 000 people pass through Bordeaux's Botanic Garden. Follow us through its different parts.
