Probably no one would have heard of Veenhuizen if the Society of Humanitarianism had not created a penal colony here.

At the height of the free colonies, about 5000 people lived here, who also needed medical care. A hospital complex was built for them on this spot. Today Hotel Restaurant "Bitter en Zoet" is located here.

The old kitchen building is restored to its former glory, so that it is now the hotel's kitchen, bakery and laundry room, like it also once was for the hospital. If you want to rest here, take a look at the beautiful gardens - there are over 100 year old hydrangeas, linden, beech and chestnut trees.

Veenhuizen became a "normal" village around 1980, but the spirit of history is can easily b found. Bitter en Zoet also continues the tradition of its own vegetable garden, pigs in the forest and local products. Veenhuizen used to be self-sufficient in the past. That character you can still find everywhere. In the old grain mill there is now a beer brewery called Maallust, produced by "heavy boys" with a nod to the past.

Besides the fact that Veenhuizen has an active prison, you can also learn more about the history of punishments and the Society of Humanitarianism in the Prison Museum. Aside from interactive exhibits and a modern prison gate, you will find historical artifacts, including a rack and straitjackets. There are cells, a yard and vehicles such as detention vans.

You also get a good impression of the story of Veenhuizen and the Society for Humanitarianism through the book and the musical theater performance of the same name "Het Pauperparadijs".

Feel free to look around Veenhuizen. Once you're done, we'll continue our way back to Appelscha from this spot.
