Look to the south in the distance is Inyan Kara Mountain. Inyan Kara Mountain is on the National registry of Historic Places. It is a sacred place to the Lakota and many Plains indian tribes along with Devils tower and Sundance Mountain. This area was included in the original Lakota Reservation Treaty and Euro-Americans were banned. Custer's expedition came through the area to scout for places for a military outpost and to look for Gold, In 1874 Custers Expedition with 1000 men camped at the base of Inyan Kara. While at this location, Custer lost two men who are buried in the area and Custer climbed to the summit of Inyan Kara and carved his name in the rocks. The inscription can still be read today.
