On the corner of Karl Marx street and Gagarin Boulevard there is Irkutsk Regional Local History Museum which is one of the most famous buildings in the city. Its historical department and library are located at this address. They occupy the entire complex of East-Siberian department of Emperor Russian Geographical Society. The principal building is made in Moorish style in 1883 with the project of Heinrich Rozen, an engineer and an architect. The complex includes the museum conservative department (now there is a museum library instead) and unique gates. It's worth explaining by conservative department we mean preservation of valuable things which museums do. The frieze of the building has 12 cut names of scientists who researched Eastern outskirts of Russia. Those are the names of Bering, Vrangel, Georgi, Gmelin, Humboldt, Krashennikov, Ledebour, Messerschmitt, Middendorff, Miller, Pallas and Steller. In 1901 there was an anniversary Emperor Russian Geographical Society and some names were added to the former 12 ones. Those were the names of Maak Maksimovich, Nordenskiöld, Przheval'skiy, Turchaninov, Cherskiy. The name of admiral and Polar researcher Alexander Vasilievich Kolchak was cut on the frieze of the museum in 2007. His name was the 19th on the frieze. Now there are only 11 vacant “spot” on it. In 1963 a memorial plaque dedicated to Vladimir Obruchev appeared. The plaque states that “Vladimir Obruchev, a prominent geologist and a geography researcher of Asia had been working here in 1888-1892 and in 1895-1989”
