The former railway pavilion of the then S-Bahn, was built in 1898 as the Stadtbahn Karlsplatz station designed by Otto Wagner (in collaboration with Joseph Maria Olbrich). Wagner developed two equally designed portal buildings. Wagner's design was revolutionary: many decorative details make the station a striking example of Viennese Art Nouveau. Metal and wood were painted in the color of a green apple or the color of a light rail signal. Added golden and white marble from the outside. On the occasion of the planning of the Karlsplatz metro station on the basis of the old ways, the pavilion was threatened with demolition in the late 1960s. But protests followed, but the station buildings were finally dismantled, and in 1977 they were again installed, but 1.5 m above the old level. Since then, the Wine Museum has been using the western pavilion, from where the trains went to Hutteldorf. Here is the documentation about the life and work of Otto Wagner. The eastern pavilion serves as a coffee shop.
