In the 13th century the “Mittlere Brücke” was built in Basle. At the same time, bishop Heinrich von Thun built a small town, called “Kleinbasel” at the right bank of the Rhine. After a bishop had pawned Kleinbasel” to Habsburg because of poverty, the town of Basle itself was able to acquire the little town at the end of the 14th century, and since 1392 “Gross”- and Kleinbasel” have been united as one.
