Middelburg once knew eight city gates and the Koepoort is the only one that has been preserved in its entirety. This gate, built in Baroque style, was built by the architect Jan de Munck and the sculptor Jan Pieter van Baurscheidt de Jonge. Only a few remnants of the wall work can still be seen from the Noordpoort and the Dampoort.
