The Lane Cove Library has not always stood where it currently stands. In fact, it has undergone quite a number of changes.
In May 1923 at the current site of the Living and Learning Centre, the foundation stone of The Lane Cove War Memorial was laid. When the building was completed it became the School of Arts, housing a subscription library, reading room, billiard room, a hall and meeting rooms, with one room set aside for the sole use of the returned men.
The School of Arts then became the Lane Cove Library, officially opening in February 1955. When the Lane Cove Council Chambers moved to their current location in 1962, the Lane Cove Library moved across the road to its present location.
Today the Lane Cove Library is a hive of activity, having the highest borrowing rate per capita in New South Wales.
