LCC and Tabard Garden Estate (1910-1935)
Overview

The Tabard Gardens Estate was built on the site of one of London’s most notorious slums, cleared by the London County Council (LCC) before WWI. It was bought by Ministry of Health to house the working-class, and became one of the “Homes fit for Heroes” project in the interwar years. Tabard Gardens became an experimental housing project with the most advanced technological equipment, such as electric passengers lifts, and an abundance of greenery for the soldiers, sailors and pilots returning from the war.
