Le Dôme, La Rotonde, Le Sélect en La Coupole

Until 1914 there was a market for models at this crossing. Local artists would come here every Monday morning to find their models for the week. All kinds of people hung out here, from the shabbily dressed to prostitutes to elegantly attired Italian models. Sanne Bruinier, who lived close by, would probably also come here to find models to draw, or she would find them at Académie Colarossi, where she was studying.

On the left at the junction you can see Le Dôme restaurant, and in front of you to the right is La Rotonde. Slightly further along are the equally famous establishments Le Sélect and La Coupole. Many artists and writers would meet at these four café-restaurants in the 20th century, including Ossip Zadkine, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Dutch painters like Piet Mondriaan and Kees van Dongen.

La Rotonde was initially popular among writers and artists, but after a change of ownership the entire crowd moved on to Le Dôme. The famous model Kiki de Montparnasse shocked visitors there by baring her breasts at the pavement café.

After the Second World War, these eateries were frequented by Dutch artists like Karel Appel, Corneille, Lotti van der Gaag and Dora Tuynman.

Cross the zebra crossing to La Rotonde and continue along Boulevard du Montparnasse.
