The building to your left is the Leipzig Opera House and is well known in Europe. The original opera house at the location was established in 1693, making it one of the oldest opera theaters on the continent. At that time, almost all of the opera performances were directed by the famous German composer, Georg Philipp Telemann. The orchestra from the nearby Gewandhaus has always performed at the Leipzig opera, as the opera itself has never had musicians of its own.
The original building was replaced in 1868 by the Neues Theatre. This was one of the liveliest periods for the opera and numerous famous operas from all over Europe were performed here. The Neues Theatre was completely destroyed during World War II.
Construction on the building you see today began in 1956 and the opera was inaugurated four years later. It's managed by the Oper Leipzig Company and regularly offers both modern and traditional opera performances. Tickets to the shows can be purchased at the Leipzig Opera’s website.
