One of the largest squares of Ryazan. It is the geographical center of the old city. The historical name of the square is Khlebnaya (Bread square). In the early 1800s, stone merchant rows were erected at the expense of Ryazan merchants in the square. Six buildings, designed by architect Sulakadzev, surrounded it by perimeter, thus forming its current limits. Only 2 of them have survived till today. The main commodity here was bread (flour, grain, etc.). That's why the square got such a name. By the middle of the XIX century, the center of all the city trade  moved here.

On the occasion of the coronation of Emperor Alexander II in 1856, the city authorities raised the issue of erecting a church on Novobazarnaya square. The people began collecting donations. Patron Gavrila Ryumin donated 13.5 thousand rubles for this. But the money was not enough to build a church, so in 1860 they  constructed the Alexander Nevsky chapel – a small, but very elegant and beautiful building. Unfortunately, after the Revolution, it was destroyed.

Today a monument to Vladimir Lenin is located in the square. It was opened on April 22, 1956. The author of the work is M. Manizer.  There is an opinion that the artist sculpted it for some seaside city, because the pedestal clearly resembles the nose of a ship. But for some reason it had been rejected and, as a result, was sent to Ryazan.

Just behind it begins Pochtovaya Street - the oldest pedestrian street in the city.
