In 1902 the exuberant school population of the Liceo Ginnasio "Vittorio Emanuele" had to be divided: some classes went, then, to occupy the building of the Magdalene (in the area located near Piazza Garibaldi called "Duchesca"), which, used as a monastic retreat, was part of the second group of Opere Pie. Here, at the beginning of the year 300, in an isolated and rich place of villas the Church and the Hospital of the Annunciation had been erected and to these contiguous, for the piety of Sancia, wife of King Robert, a house was built named after St. Mary Magdalene Penitent: a Monastery destined to become one of the most important in Naples. In 1489 Alfonso, Duke of Calabria, transferred to the Church of Maddalena the bodies of 240 Martyrs Idruntini (since then the sacred place took the name of Santa Maria dei Martiri) and, in return for giving the nuns the Church and the Monastery of Santa Caterina a Formiello, He made Magdalene his home. The successor of Alfonso Frederick of Aragon had the bodies of the Martyrs transferred to Santa Caterina a Formiello and returned to the nuns the Magdalene which was thus back to being a Monastery. The building had a moment of flourishing life in the second half of the century. XVIII, when it was enlarged on a design of Mario Gioffredi that on a tombstone, still readable, did not hesitate to report the most important events. In 1903, at the behest of the Principal Giuseppe Finzi, it was decided to give the Institute the name of "Giuseppe Garibaldi", the Hero of the Two Worlds, and on June 3, 1903, a modest ceremony took place in the School, in which both the Dean and Prof. Tito Spinelli spoke about the hero with De Filippis, a third-year high school student: the Ministry approved the proposal. On the occasion of the first mentioned ceremony, we note, was inaugurated a marble bust of Garibaldi, run at the expense of students and teachers, which was placed on a marble column, gift of Prof. Achille Capasso. The "Garibaldi" became an autonomous institution on July 1, 1905 as a result of a Bill presented a year earlier to Parliament by the Minister of Time. The communication was given to the Principal prof. Finzi by the R. Provveditore to the Studies of the time, prof. Vincenzo Belsani. Finzi, appointed Commendatore in the meantime, was Principal of the High School until 1906/1907, when, for family reasons, he was forced to move to Genoa: Prof. Canilli succeeded him. Prof. Canilli, Dean of the "Garibaldi" from the 1st of October 1907, held the position until the 30th of September 1911, after which he preferred to pass to the Regio Liceo "Berchet" of Milan: he was replaced by Prof. Pietro Pellizzari. Pellizzari was Principal until 1919, the year in which, for an incurable evil, he ceased to live. He succeeded Pellizzari, but for only one year, Prof. Cav. Uff. Mauro Serrano. To the Presidency of the "Garibaldi" was, therefore, in charge, for transfer from Avellino, the Cav. Giulio Cesare Bernardi who governed the Institute until September 1923.
