Glazkovo suburb begins its history with the founding of Glazkovo settlement. It was founded in XVIII. Lermontovskaya, Gogolevskaya, Pushkinskaya streets are marked on the city plan of 1899. Irkutsk newspapers wrote about those “literary” streets in Glazkovo suburbs:  Gogolevskaya (1907), Lermontovskaya (1906),  Pushkinskaya (1901), Turgenevskaya (1909), earlier known as Lower Embankment). The suburb itself was renamed to Sverdlovo in 1920. New streets are acquiring some unconventional names, there were more often serial numbers behind the same named street like Second Glazkovskaya, First, Second, Third Line streets and so on. It was only in 1940 when Irkutsk city council of deputies renamed some streets. The street names were given in honor of some social activists. Gogolevskaya street is one of the oldest streets of Glazkovo suburb. Gogolevskaya street is marked on the city plan of 1899. The street has been called Gogol street since 1961.

Lermontovskaya street is marked on the city map of 1899. It is named after Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov who was a Russian poet, prosaic, playwright, artist. He also was  an officer of the Russian army.

Since 1961 this historical street was renamed to Lermontov street. This was the longest street of Sverdlovsk district, its length is almost 6 km.

Pushkinskaya street in Glazkovo suburb was called after the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) in 1899 when Irkutsk celebrated his 100th anniversary of. Since the middle of 1961 Pushkinskaya street had been called Pushkin street.

There is a Chernykhovskaya street on the city plan of 1899. It is possible that the name of the street derived from the surname of Chernykh.

In Irkutsk City Reference Book of 1915 the street is mentioned under the name of Chernykhovskaya. In this case it is possible to assume that the name derives from Chernykhov surname or Chernigov.

In 1934 the street was renamed from Chernyshevskogo to Chernyshevskogo.

Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky (1828-1889) was a Russian utopian philosopher, revolutionary and democrat, scientist, literary critic, publicist, writer. He published Sovremennik magazine with revolutionary propaganda which led to his exile in 1864. He was convicted to penal servitude for 14 years and then to a life exile in Siberia.  On the whole he spent in jail and in penal servitude more than 20 years.

In 1940 under the decision of Irkutsk City Council of Deputes of Workers some streets of Glazkovo suburb were named after prominent literary men of Russian literature.

Alexander Sergeevich Griboedov who was a Russain diplomat, poet, pianist and songwriter. He was a noble man. He is famous for his play “Woe From Wit”. This play is included in so called Golden Fund of Russian Literature. The play is still shown in theaters of Russia.

Vasily Andreevich Zhukovsky (1783-1852) who was a Russian poet, translator of poetry and prose, literary critic, educationalist and a literary mentor of Alexander Pushkin.

Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov (1711 – 1765) who was a famous Russian scientist of the world scale. He was a chemist, physicist, artist, historian, poet and writer.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) who was a famous Russian writer,  playwright, doctor and publicist. In 1890 while going to Sakhalin he stopped in Irkutsk.

In 1954 there were massive celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Chekhov. The idea appeared to name the street after him. It was the street where the hotel Amurskoe Podvorie was located. Chekhov stayed in this hotel. The street was called Malaya Blinovskaya, since 1934 it was called Kolkhoznaya, Chekhov street actually had already existed in Sverdlovsky district.

Under the decision of Irkutsk City Council, two streets “swapped” their respective names on the 4th of November, 1954.
