In 1920 in accords with Irkutsk City Council of Laborer and Red Army Deputies Lugovaya street was renamed to Marata. It happened to commemorate the 3d anniversary of the Great October Revolution. Lugovaya street was one of the oldest streets of Irkutsk and it is marked on 1768 city plan. According to city legends, citizens shephered their cattle to Angara pasture or "meadow" which is translated as "Lug" (hence, Lugovaya) into Russian.
