For a long time, the exploit of Rakhimzhan Koshkarbaev was not recognized by Soviet historians. Only in 2007 it was officially announced that during the storming of the Reichstag in Berlin during the Second World War, Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev and Grigory Bulatov were the first to establish the banner. At the time of this heroic deed, Koshkarbayev was only 21 years old. Despite the courage shown, the Kazakh soldier was not awarded any awards of the Soviet Army. However, in 2001, Rakhimzhan Koshkarbayev was posthumously awarded with the title of "People's Hero" by the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
