Edward Douwes Dekkers, as his real name was, is among the most famous Dutch writers of the 19th century. He used to work as an official in the Dutch Indies. It was here that he wrote his most famous work ‘Max Havelaar’, a novel in which he, based on his own experiences, denounced the way the native population was being treated by the Dutch Indian governance.
