The Museum of Ascona was created in 1922, when many artists came to Ascona between the wars and decided to donate some of their works to the municipality, with the aim of establishing a museum.
These works have since formed the original core of the collection, which today includes more than 500 works of art by important artists such as Marianne Werefkin, Alexej Jawlensky, Cuno Amiet, Julius Bissier, Paul Klee, Ben Nicholson, Arthur Segal, Italo Valenti…
Over time, the Museum has also been enriched with interesting funds: The Carl Weidemeyer Fund, the Charlotte Bara Fund, and in 2014, the Anna Iduna Zehnder Fund.
Finally, the Museum is home to the Richard and Uli Seewald Foundation and, above all, the important Marianne Werefkin Foundation. With about 90 paintings and 170 sketchbooks it is the most important collection of this outstanding Russian artist, a true icon in Ascona’s cultural environment of the time.
