We are now standing in front of the Muurhuizen in Amersfoort. As you learned earlier the Muurhuizen were part of the first city wall of Amersfoort which the Kamperbinnenpoort was part of as well. The Muurhuizen is a street that is 1.3 km long and runs in a circular shape. Only a third of this street is called Muurhuizen the other two are named the Breestraat and the Scherbiestraat. In the 14th century the original city wall of Amersfoort got too small and 1380 the government decided to built a second city wall. This being the reason the original wall got demolished in 1450. With the bricks and remains of the wall the muurhuizen got built. With exception on the house Tinneburg and the Plompedieven tower that got built around 1400 the oldest Muurhuizen decents from 1600. The plompedieven tower was used as a second city jail back in the days. This is also where the tower got its name from. House Tinneburg, a residential house nowadays possibly was part of strengthning the city wall in the Middle Ages and defended the water supply. The Muurhuizen is keeps 60 national monuments which some have a well known name. the houses are normal residential houses nowadays. And it is also a fun fact to mention that my great grandfather actually owned 4 of these national monuments in the period of 1904 till 1908.
